Who's ready for 10-10-09?

10.10 Community Day for 2008 has come and gone. There are so many stories, blessings and photos to share and we will over the next few days, but I did want to get some really initial thoughts down while they were fresh in my mind.

The spirit of kindness, of giving, of compassion,of gratitude, of love, of joy and of hope was alive at 10.10 Day and every single person involved was an integral part of that spirit -- whether you were a volunteer during the day or a person involved on the other end. My heart is bursting with joy even now to think of some of the things that happened today.

10.10 Day has been about the day, but it's always been about much more than that. As we finished our second year of committing to intentionally go out into our community and give and serve freely of ourselves, we again realized that that spirit of kindness -- that spirit of joy -- that spirit can be a part of our every days.

We will be back to share the stories of 10.10 over the next few days. It was a rich day filled with great people and great stories, but right now, the thing that stands out the most is my overall feeling: Let's make every day just like this day!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for...

I heard a story the other day that reminded me of what we're trying to crystallize on 10.10 day -- this idea of selfless giving --giving without needing or wanting anything in return.

A friend was saying how she occassionally has to walk a few blocks from her office to the post office. The other day she had to bring some money along to pay for postage, and got some change back from the transaction.

Well, not having any pockets, she didn't want to carry the bills and loose change back, so thought, What can I do with this money? She saw a young mother walking along with two small kids and thought, Bingo.

Approaching the mother, she said, "Can you do me a favor? I have some change and no pockets or anything to carry it in -- I'd love to give this to you to buy your children some ice cream?" The mother was taken aback at first -- it isn't every day that someone approaches you with pro-ice cream-directives like this. :) But then she was very grateful and said she was off to do just that.

I'd like to think that that kind of pay-it-forward thinking replicates itself. Who knows? Maybe that mom or the kids went on and gave half of their ice cream to another friend that wasn't there at the time. You just never know. An ordinary act with the possibility for extraordinary results. That's just the kind of thing we like.

As mentioned, a big component of the day is a food drive benefitting the Norwalk Emergency Shelter. Some of the specific food items the organization mentioned needing right now were:

I know that's a pretty exhaustive list, but somebody's bound to have some pork & beans lying around, right? ;) (It's not everyday that you get to ask that question.)

You can bring any and all food items to the Sunoco service station where we will be collecting food or to the Norwalk Stop and Shop on Main Avenue where we will also be collecting on 10.10. Check out the schedule for more details about when we'll be there to collect the food.

Contagious Kindness - hey, it could happen

The 10.10 Project is, among other things, about the idea that you can selflessly give to the people and places surrounding you. It can be something as small as letting someone in front of you line, but the idea is to just start somewhere.

We came up with a list of 10 things that you can do on that day (and beyond) but we'd love to hear your ideas, too. Add them and let's revolutionize our community -- one contagious act of kindness at a time.

10. Ask your coworker if they need help with any work.
9. Tip your waiter even extra.
8. Offer to babysit for friends.
7. Take in your neighbor’s recycling bins/trash bins on garbage day while you’re taking yours.
6. Buy a cup of coffee for the commuter behind you in line.
5. Let someone in front of you in traffic.
4. Tell a friend about something nice that reminded you of them.
3. Donate blood through the local Red Cross.
2. Pay the toll for the person behind you in line.
1. Smile at people you don’t even know.

Our Schedule for 10.10.08

It will be a full day on October 10th. Anyone and everyone are invited to join us. Here's a look at the schedule:

6:00am – 9:00am: Train Ministry Prayer Project at Norwalk Train Stations

9:00am – 1:00pm: City Park Beautification at Bouton Street Park in South Norwalk in partnership with Robidoux Landscaping and the City of Norwalk

2:00pm – 4:00pm: Neighborhood Kids Celebration @ Bouton Street Park
We'll have balloons, face painting, games and fun for everyone in the neighborhood.

2:00pm – 7:00pm: We will be at Stop and Shop (380 Main Avenue), in front of the store, to promote awareness regarding the food drive we are doing with the Norwalk Emergency Shelter.

5:00pm– 7:00pm: Norwalk Emergency Shelter Food Drive at Sunoco Ultra Service Center (336 Main Avenue).

Imagine A People...

...who are convinced that the kind of life Jesus had in mind when He spoke of “life to its fullest” is available now. What if those people decided to interpret what other thinkers have called “the good life” as a life of loving, sharing and giving?

What would happen if, empowered and inspired by that interpretation, they decided to venture into places where help was needed, both locally and globally, depending upon Jesus for their guidance? What amazing things could that community accomplish?

The people of Northeast Community Church in Norwalk CT want to steward their human, spiritual, technical, and financial resources into some time-bound measurable goals. By working toward those objectives we hope to really experience, demonstrate and share life to its fullest in Christ.

Once a year on the 10th day of the 10th month we will engage the community with “1010day.” The second annual 1010day is 10.10.2008 and will be a day of giving and serving our community.
